What is working for us this week is https://www.spellingcity.com We joined the free membership version and it has been a wonderful asset to our school day. I logged into the website over the weekend and added the children's lists of spelling words. They login when they are working on spelling and spend time going through the weekly list. The program reads, defines and uses words in sentence context. There are practice tests, multiple spelling games, vocabulary practice, and a teach me mode. I find this website to be helpful in working with the different learning styles we enjoy in our home.
The biggest difference I see is the time the children spend on their word lists. Prior to Spellingcity.com the children spent less than 5 minutes daily on a 30 word list. Results at the end of the week were consistent with their natural abilities to spell and the amount of time spent studying. So far this week each child is spending 20+ minutes daily on their lists. One child took a practice test midweek(today) and scored a 94%.
I am thrilled to find a program that is simple to use for the mom or dad, has educational value with high interest level for the children, and saves me from reminding/nagging to get words practiced in time for our weekly pass off. Another perk for our family is that it has a free version(handy for a tight budget).
We've tried Spelling City in the past too! My children liked it well enough and it was more enjoyable than a regular spelling quiz.
ReplyDeleteWe love spellingcity.com at my house. I love that it's a subject I can leave in their hands for the most part.
