Passing and Blessings

This past week hubby's father passed away. He was blessed to live in relative comfort and ability to 93 years of age. His passing came just after his birthday, Cowboys birthday, and the family reunion. This was a special week as we were able to see Grandpa, love on him and say goodbye. We celebrated birthdays, enjoyed the fun of a family reunion, reflected on past reunions and the importance of family.

Tears were present, hearts ached, love abounded, unity was visible, the sacredness of life was felt. We were blessed, comforted, fed and prayed for by many as we let go of a dear one and accepted what must be.

Today our hefer cow had her first calf. The kiddos went back and forth between excitement, awe and grossed out.  All I can say is that I am so glad I am not a cow. Poor girl bellered like the best of 'em. Thank goodness for neighbors to help out.  She pushed and they pulled. Sadly the calf was stillborn.

Cowboy and Smiley got the opportunity to help out with the delivery/pulling. The calf was perfectly formed, beautiful but not alive. The local dairy sold us two calves so that the cow would have relief from all the milk she will produce in the months to come. Today was another opportunity for us to reflect on life.

I was amazed at how quickly the mother cow accepted the two new calves. We were told that she likely would not take well with the new ones. She surprised us all by smelling them, letting them nurse and cleaning them up as if they were her own. We are grateful for her mothering heart.

Life.
