Happily Tired

It is so easy to get caught up in having to do everything  just because it is Christmas. I have seen the sad puppy eyes from a child who thinks a missed event would be unforgivable because it's Christmas. Or the look from Hubby, did you get them something as they are standing at our door handing us a treat of something wonderful.
Twenty-one young years married and I hope I have learned a thing or two. First off, a missed event is just that...missed. We cannot do everything or be everywhere.  Prioritizing has helped keep what's important in focus.  Keeping the spirit of Christ in our home at this special time of year is our goal.  Letting go of the ideal holiday has been wonderful.  The true gift giver gives without any expectations of a return.
Shortly after Hubby and I were married we were surprised with gifts at the door by complete strangers. At first we thought they must have had the wrong house. Then when it kept happening we learned of the 12 days of Christmas. That started us on our path of taking treats to special people in our community. More importantly it made us reflect on the good of others and that we could do good as well. Thus far we have been blessed with two 12 days of Christmas seasons both of them coming at times when we were very overwhelmed with life circumstances.
Over the years we have made hundreds of cinnamon rolls, cookies and doughnuts. Each family we deliver to has a special part in our lives. We have invited our children to consider which families we should add to our list. Each year Hubby and I add some that are new and usually have circumstances in their lives that a special treat and thoughtful card helps ease their burdens.
This year Cowboy could drive so it was fun to watch him off with two little runners and plates of sweetness to deliver. All of the children came back this year begging to do some more next year. Their eyes shone with excitement and pleasure.  Our children have learned to think about others, give to others and do so with a glad heart. We have been blessed in return with many wonderful friends and family.
Now the kitchen is cleaned up. The smells of baked goods have spread through the house and the baker can put up her feet:) It is good to be happily tired.
